Most Tasmanian Eucalypt species produce figured wood, however some species regularly produce more distinct figuring. Some Tasmanian Eucalypt tree species produce burls of different grain from very resinous to tight marbling. Brown Top Stringybark Eucalyptus produces some massive burls that can have exceptional marble or cork grain patterning suited to veneering. The tight grained veneers sand and finish well. Leatherwood trees are only found as an understory tree in Tasmania’s wetter mixed forests and rainforests across State forests, parks and reserves. Leatherwood trees harvested from within some coops can produce logs which contain a rich palette of timber colours from pinks through to browns. Red-heart logs contain the most figured wood, similar in appearance to Black-Heart Sassafras. Leatherwood is very fine grained timber and known for its good workability and finish. Sassafras grows as an understory tree in Tasmania’s wet mixed forests and rainforests but also grows in Victoria and New South Wales. Sassafras is famous for its spectacular black-heart stain caused by naturally occurring wood fungi which produces a range of contrasting brown to black colours in the heartwood. Creative veneer lay-ups can produce stunning effects with even slight amounts of heart stain. Spalted Sassafras timber, with fine dark lines caused by stain fungi in the log after harvesting, is also attractive and popular in craft and furniture items.
