Mahogany Timber Veneer
Mahogany Timber Veneer – African Mahogany (Khaya spp) can be found in the coastal rainforests of west Africa from the Ivory Coast to Cameroon and Gabon. It grows to a height of 55-60m and a diameter of 1.2-1.8m. It has a reddish brown heartwood colour. The grain can be straight but is usually interlocked. This produces a striped figure on quarter cut surfaces. African Mahogany is valued as a substitute for American Mahogany.
American Mahogany (Swietenia spp) is found in southern Mexico and in the South American countries of Columbia, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil. In the forest it can grow to 45m in height but plantation trees average around 30m only. The trunk is around 1.2-1.8m in diameter. The sapwood is a yellowish white colour. The heartwood varies from pale red to dark red-brown. Mahogany timber veneer is mostly straight grained but can be interlocked which creates a highly valued figure on quarter sawn surfaces.
