Sapele Timber Veneer

Sapele Timber Veneer – Sapele (Entandrophragma cylindricum) grows extensively across Africa.  It originated in the west African rainforests of the Ivory Coast, but can now be found as far east as Tanzania. Sapele gets its name from the Nigerian city of Sapele, where there is an abundance of the tree. It is a member of the Mahogany family and is often substituted for South American Mahogany.

Sapele is a tall, straight tree that can grow to up to 45m tall with a trunk diameter of up to 1.5m.  The heartwood colour of Sapele timber veneer is a golden to dark reddish brown.  The colour tends to darken with age.

Quarter-sawn sheets can have a common ribbon pattern.  Sapele is also known for a wide variety of other figured grain patterns.  There is pommele, mottled, quilted, wavy, beeswing and fiddleback. Its grain is interlocked and sometimes wavy.  The texture is fine and it has a natural lustre.
